quick idea?

for the angel statue room, Phil gave me a rough thumbnail idea that i scratched into the graphics tablet, definitely going to be using this as to work into as one of my final 3

this is a very busy 'work weekend' for me, so blogging is going to be quick. hopefully, ill have some time tomorrow to upload a bit more for the interim crit.

part 2

wow, they really don't look like much on here, anyway, this is a line concept of the open plain of ruins.

this is of the angel statue in the named temple, I'm considering having this in a dramatic worms eye view

the walls that surround the empty plains, 40ft in height. this is a worms eye view shot, I'm considering taking it back a little so to get the moat in, and lower it slightly to add some ground detail, including ruins.

the tomb corridor that leads into the main tomb containing the angel. this is highly under detailed at this stage, but like this idea for some reason. will definitely be running with this one.

i was obviously playing with this one a little bit more, only because it looked tremendously flat as a line drawing. this is the entrance to the before mentioned temple.

it has to be mentioned again, these are very preliminary, they don't contain any depth, but are good for me as a jumping off point.

Quick line drawings of some possible concepts

the clues in the name. These uploads are line sketches done in photo shop, they didn't take more than 15 minutes each, and were more for a perspective and scale exercise than anything else. don't expect mad detail just yet.

i will upload them in another post as Blogger is being a temperamental bitch right now, and won't let me upload anything.

cliff notes

So i have just finished the entire She novel, and i have to say, what a fantastic read! (also, this is why i haven't been blogging as frequently as usual) you can clearly see where a lot of the imagination for films such as: Indiana Jones and the mummy now came from.

really and truly i have to say, this was a utterly transcendent read and would recommend it to each and every one of my peers as a spot of bedtime reading at least. fabulous story!

anyway, what I'm about to post are some key notes and phrases from the chapter given, as well as my own random ramblings and notes. they may seem like random brainstorms, and they are, but its good for me to reference back on them when detailing my concepts, and so u can have an idea of what to expect. PS. the thumbnails and hand drawn concepts will be uploaded asap.

ruined city
high walls sunken, 40ft, broad 20ft, surrounded by 60ft moat
sundown
pillars, statues, temples, castles, palaces, ruined
miles and miles, patched with shrubbery and desecrating weeds
hard dry terrain, dusty almost. no rain
temples going in ascending order...small to large on mounds

inner temple, eternal darkness trapper room corridor-esque
rows and rooms unused and columns
dark night...moonlight strong - roofless temple room
large winged woman, bending over, poised - light veil over head, draped over breasts.
20ft
tablet underneath
moonlight bouncing all over it

now this probably doesn't set much in your head, but for me, this sets out a nice little ''checklist'' for me to look back on, as these were the given features in the chapters...really looking forward to churning out some more colourful concepts, and might i add, the 1965 movie has done a stand up job of staying true to the book

lets crack on then...

A few notes about 'She'

I thought I'd leave a few jump off points down in the next post, a few key words/phrases i found in my excerpts that would aid in me creating a more visually striking concept design finally, and in doing this, anyone can see what my aim is from the start, and see how much i do or don't deviate from it by the end.

I've just managed to see the most terrible copy of the 1965 version of She, starring Ursula Andress and Peter Cushing. From the parts i could make out, this seemed to be a fairly high budget piece, beautiful tropical backdrops and luscious indigenous themes run throughout to create a clear scene. I can only blame my dislike on the film for the shoddy quality version i managed to obtain, i haven't had to deal with 'VHS tracking' for years!
however despite this, I've been given a few ideas of my own now, so am looking forward to cracking on with some serious sketching...its been a while, but lets have it!

Information on this title is extremely rare on the Internet, i haven't found a single concept by anyone, I'm having trouble digging up any production info other than the studio responsible for producing it (hammer horror). i assumed such a prolific title would have been more widely discussed, but it seems this isn't the case.

Now as i can't find any real concept art at the moment for this movie, i have found similar art from similarly themed movies, just for the purposes of posting on here and perhaps a little bit of colour theory reference.

This is concept art from Tomb raider, obviously a highly if not fully rendered piece of work, but definitely captures a similar vibe to that of She.

Excuse the small image, this is form alien vs predator (yawn!) this temple built by the predator species in the movie is very different from any other temple you will find as it has elements of futuristic aliens in its shape (not well shown here) being built by an advanced being, yet still needs to allow the audience to relate so borrows themes from Egyptian style pyramids.

These 2 images are early 3d digital concepts for Eternal darkness (2002 Gamecube) and before i say anything else, this is hands down, without a doubt one of my favourite video games I've ever played in my life. it is extremely innovative and one of a kind, this game actually caused Nintendo to patent the idea of ''video game sanity'', and if you have played it you'll understand what i am talking about. I've got 2 copy's, so if anyone is interested in having a go, just say. as you can see by this, the images are all very similar, ancient ancestral ethnic flavours, quite 'stock' tribal type ideas, but they all work.

lets see what i can conj our up now then . . .

She: A history of adventure

Wow, where do i begin?
excuse my ignorance, but I'm actually new to this title. I had never heard of it until the second I opened up the folder 5 which it was in. upon researching the book, i found out that it is one of the best selling books of all time, and here's me never even hearing of it...wally.

there have been 3 direct movie adaptations of She, yet the latest one was produced in 1965, therefore, I'm assuming it is very basic in terms of visuals. this is good, as i should be able to give my own twist on things when designing my environments, without unknowingly pinching ideas.

I've read both pdfs given, but before putting down anything to concrete, i am looking for a copy or site showing the 1965 version of this, just to see what has been done and see how i can change things, the last thing i want to do is put down something that's been done to death.

so, the search continues...in the meantime here is some of the graphics tablet work from Fridays workshop

just 2 quick architectural washes, really beginning to loosen up with graphics tablets, hopefully in the coming weeks, we can start to see some real magic!

Essay plans

I think I'm getting back into my writing groove quicker than expected which is always good (considering i spent two years doing a diploma in art and design, very little writing was needed to get me through)

anyway, I'm extremely excited about this essay, i think there is going to be a lot to talk about for everyone this time.
the brief states to analyse the production design of one game/movie, but i have been doing my own writing about a similar subject recently anyway.
The twilight zone is a very popular, often parodied TV show, that owes everything to its production design. i am intrigued to look in to this further, as every episode has a different kind of style, however they each work beautifully for the purposes of the often given 'moral of the story'.

so watch this space for more development on this, i think i could just get stuck in right away, but would possibly have to sit back and watch several hours of twilight zone...dam you Play.com!!
